Information For Beginners

WHAT IS ARGENTINE TANGO?

Argentine Tango is an intricate and intimate language with a rich cultural and musical tradition and an international community. Learning tango is a great way to meet new people, develop body awareness and cultivate physical activity, and express yourself creatively to music.  It can be a great activity to do with your significant other, and it is also fun to come alone and dance with many partners.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY LIKE?

There are formal tango dances ("milongas") in Hartford about twice a month, and many dances in nearby communities (Northampton, New Haven, Boston, New York, and others).  Dances in Hartford are typically attended by about 60 people. Hartford also has a weekly practice ("practica") and group classes, which are attended by about 30 people.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO LEARN TANGO?

To learn tango, we recommend taking a weekly group class, practicing once a week if possible, taking occasional private lessons, and most importantly, GOING OUT DANCING FOR FUN.

HOW CAN I GET STARTED?

The best way to get started is to Contact Us to schedule a few private lessons. Then you will be able to join our Intermediate Class at 7pm Monday nights at the The Garage Dance Studio in New Britain and stay for the practica afterward.

WHERE CAN I GO DANCING?

We would like to stress the importance of going to dances for fun rather than simply taking classes.

The Hartford Argentine Tango Society (HARTS) offers a weekly practica on Monday evenings, a formal milonga on the Fourth Saturday of most months, and occasional Sunday milonguitas.  The home of HARTS is the Garage Dance Studio and Gallery in New Britain:
